Why logos scaled to the same height in PowerPoint still look uneven

The problem: same height, different weight

Drop a set of partner logos onto a slide, select them all, and set every one to the same height in PowerPoint's Size panel. The result almost never looks even. One mark reads as too big, another too small — even though the bounding boxes you just resized are now identical to the pixel. Nudging the outliers by eye is the standard fix, and it works, but it has to be redone from scratch every time a sponsor is added or sends a new file.

This isn't a sign the logos were badly drawn. Same height was never the same thing as same visual weight, and the gap between the two is large enough to see from across a room.

Why it happens: geometry, not sloppiness

A bounding box is a rectangle. A logo's ink is whatever shape sits inside that rectangle, and different shapes fill their rectangle by very different amounts. A solid square fills essentially all of its box. A circle inscribed in that same square fills only pi/4 of it, about 0.785 — geometry, not an approximation. A triangle pointed toward one edge fills at most half its box, 0.5. Set a square, a circle, and a triangle to the same bounding height and the circle and triangle will read as smaller and lighter than the square, because a visible quarter to a half of their box is empty space the eye correctly ignores.

The same effect shows up with type. A wide, lightly-drawn wordmark set to the same height as a compact, solid icon becomes physically much wider than the icon — because height says nothing about width, and nothing about how much of that width is actually ink versus letter-spacing and air. Sizing "by height" silently rewards whichever logo happens to be widest, or has the heaviest stroke, or the least internal counter-space, regardless of whether that logo is supposed to look more important.

A second, unrelated problem stacks on top of this. Most logo files carry built-in padding: the artwork sits inside a canvas larger than the mark itself, often to keep clear space around it. Scaling the file's frame to a common height scales that padding along with the ink, so two logos with visually identical ink can render at different sizes purely because one file shipped with a wider margin than the other.

The manual fix in PowerPoint

The standard workaround is manual, and it is a reasonable one as far as it goes. Crop each file to its visible artwork in an image editor first, so the built-in padding stops distorting the comparison. In PowerPoint, select each logo and use the Size fields under Picture Format with "Lock aspect ratio" checked — resizing only one dimension stretches the mark, which no version of this problem justifies. Use Align > Align Middle to line every logo up against a shared vertical center. Then, because equal height still isn't equal weight even after the crop is fixed, nudge the circular and thin-stroke marks up a few percent by eye, and nudge the solid blocks down, until the row reads as balanced rather than measured.

This gets the job done for a single slide, but it does not scale: every new sponsor means re-cropping, re-measuring, and re-eyeballing the row again.

The one-click alternative
